Some intelligences don’t speak; they photosynthesise, root, and remember across geological time. Knowledge never belongs to a single body — it forms in the space between an Artemisia root, a 450-million-year-old block of marble, a dancing body, and a machine intelligence held in the same room.

COAL Prize 2026 — Nominated

COAL (Coalition pour une écologie culturelle) is a French environmental art prize supporting artists whose work confronts ecological questions; the 17th edition is dedicated to the night. Artemisia Noctis: A Grammar of Darkness is one of ten projects nominated. At its centre stands Artemisia vulgaris — the Mater Herbarum, deeply rooted in Celtic, Mediterranean and Andalusi folk traditions — who does not bloom: she is the garden’s director, a scent-plant who releases her fragrance into the night air and holds the ensemble in tune. Around her, nine night-blooming plants — night-scented tobacco, four o’clock flower, evening primrose, night-blooming jasmine and queen of the night among them — open only after dark and speak in fragrance rather than colour. Visitors navigate the garden by smell and by hearing. The moths, bats and beetles that hold these ecosystems together become the subjects of a research-action carried out with naturalists, and the work opens into a participatory moonlight performance around nocturnal pollinators. In defending the ecological continuity of darkness, the project argues for preserving the discreet grammar of the living: scent, lunar rhythm, animal circulation, and the older knowledge the night still shelters.

The Quantum Leaf Speaks in Ancient Tongues

The project of Bajo’s 2026 John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship carries matrilineal Celtic botanical knowledge into contact with speculative computation through choreographic scores, Jacquard weaving and sculptural installation — movement performed alongside plants rather than about them, with the body as the instrument through which vegetal signal becomes legible. Underwriting the work is quantum entanglement taken as compositional law: what has once been in relation never fully separates, and keeps acting across distance and time.

Choreography is how the knowledge enters a body. Working alongside plants over weeks — attending to their rhythm, their chemistry, their hours — participants arrive at scores no single author wrote. Bajo calls these anarchoreographies: movement composed by the relational field rather than issued to it. The dancer is not illustrating a plant; the dancer is the instrument through which vegetal time becomes audible at human scale.

Two recent works feed it directly. SHIH: Thirteen Moons — Artemisia / Wallada, made at C3A Córdoba, gathered thirteen assemblages around the erased thirteen-moon calendar and the suppressed cosmologies of Andalusian and Celtic women, a living plant’s electrical activity composed into sound. SPOIL, made at Marble House Project with yarrow and 450-million-year-old marble, followed a slower exchange: the plant drawing calcium from quarry stone into its own tissue — stone becoming plant, plant becoming stone. Neither work was decided by her, and neither ends when she leaves. In The Quantum Leaf these lines converge, and the seeds are the protocol continuing without her.

She is not giving these intelligences a voice. She is building the conditions under which we can finally hear that they never stopped speaking.

Artemisia Noctis: A Grammar of Darkness

2026, in development · Prix COAL 2026 nominee

Nominated, Prix COAL 2026 — “The Night”. Shown in Sans Réserve, 4 December 2026 – 10 January 2027, Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, Paris.

Three parts: The Olfactory Night Garden, a nocturnal sensory installation navigated without artificial light, where the plants’ released scents compose an olfactory score that shifts with the lunar phases; Arianrhod’s Threshold, a participatory moonlight performance scored by scent, echo and the circumpolar stars, drawn from Celtic, Mediterranean and Andalusi night cosmologies — bodies moving through the dark; and Mapping the Disappearing Night, a research-action with naturalists tracking nocturnal pollinators, extending into an educational program that recovers subjugated forms of ecological knowledge.

SHIH: Thirteen Moons — Artemisia / Wallada

2026 · Group exhibition, C3A Centro de Creación Contemporánea, Córdoba, ES · Curated by Jesús Alcaide

In collaboration with live olive and Artemisia. Thirteen bodies in a fractal pattern mirroring the hexagonal geometry of C3A: plaster, red clay, brick, oak, copper, manganese glass, live olive and Artemisia, with sound that amplifies the plant’s bioelectrical signal, bulerías vocals, video and Artemisia scent. The work recovers the erased thirteen-month lunar calendar and the ancestral botanical knowledge of Andalusian and Celtic women. Developed during the C3A artist residency fellowship.

SPOIL

2026 · Group exhibition, Marble House Project, Dorset, Vermont, US · Curated by Ed Morris

In collaboration with yarrow and Ordovician marble. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Ordovician marble, quarry residue, UV light. The plant draws calcium from the quarry stone into its own tissue — stone becoming plant, plant becoming stone; a protocol for relational intelligence between geological, botanical and human matter.

A Growing Wave Breaks in the Shore of Time — glazed ceramic poppy heads emerging from excavated soil and asphalt rubble in a hangar-like hall, with a Jacquard tapestry hung behind.

A Growing Wave Breaks in the Shore of Time (Tomorrow I Was a Plant)

2024 · Manifesta 15 Barcelona, ES · The Swamp Thing V2 · Curated by Nuria Montclús

In collaboration with Papaver somniferum, geological matter, and algorithmic intelligence. Glazed ceramic poppy heads, soil, asphalt rubble, poppy stems and a Jacquard tapestry. Spheres rise from earth and rubble, poppy stems emerge from their mass, and the excavated ground reads as a wave arrested mid-break.

The Dance of the Opium Poppies

2021 · Matadero Madrid Center for Contemporary Art, Madrid, ES

In collaboration with Papaver somniferum and participating dancers. For two weeks the dancers took a very low microdose tincture of poppy alkaloids and lived alongside the plant, the body acting as a vessel for it to speak in the first person; an Anarchoreographic score of trust between species. Dancers: Astrid Bramming, Mado Dallery, Lauren Runions.

Freya’s Grove (Eternal Return)

2024 · SkulpturenPark Wesenberg / Gabarrón Residency, DE

In collaboration with Elm, Linden, and Morning Glory. Site-specific performative sculpture: elm sprout, reclaimed concrete, reclaimed glass, linden branches, lake stones, sand and water. An elm found sprouting from concrete is the germinal image; seven linden trees, sacred to Freya in Norse cosmology, hold the site as a temporal archive. Continued in 2025 as Freya’s Grove (Eternal Return) Non-Site at Museo Cristóbal Gabarrón, Mula, Murcia, ES.

Toxic Secrets (Oikos)

2018 · Priska Pasquer Gallery, C-Room, Cologne, DE

In collaboration with the pharmaceutical and plastic residues found in tap water. Mixed media, acrylic, dye, plastic, aluminium and ceramic: a chromatic mapping of water-borne pollutants. Pharmaceutical and plastic residues traced in tap water return as colour — pink for estradiol, green for 2C-B — in an eco-pharmacological forensics where the contaminant is admitted as co-author.

Collaborators

This work is not made alone. Artemisia vulgaris, opium poppies, yarrow, night-flowering tobacco and evening primrose; a 450-million-year-old block of Ordovician marble; quarry spoil, soil, copper and clay. They set the tempo, they refuse instructions, they continue after the work is installed and they outlast it. Where a plant or a stone has shaped a piece, it is named in the work’s description rather than treated as material.
